Linacre Methodist Mission and Neighbourhood Centre

History

The Beacon Project began in 1996 with the challenge from our minister Rev. Dave Watts to consider what our future work and witness should be in this part of Litherland, Sefton, Merseyside.

The building, referred to as 'The Mission' was built by Albert Walker and his mother Elizabeth to meet the needs of the area, as the population grew due to the development of the docks and railway. As you will see it is a huge Mission Hall, with the main worship area seating 750 and the back premises containing many large halls and smaller rooms. It was important for us to look carefuly at the financial sustainability of the building and how we could make best use of the premises for our future work.

It was a long process carrying out  feasibility studies, as it is a Grade II listed building, as well as prayerfully seeking God's guidance. Options included:

  • demolishing the building and building smaller
  • knocking the back premises down and dividing  the Main Hall into a worship area upstairs and rooms downstairs
  • Selling the builidng and moving to a new site
  • Keeping the building and developing it

This was a time consuming and costly process but one which led us to realise that the premises we had were a valuable and unique asset to the area and in 2004 the Church Council agreed to keep the building and develop it to be fit for purpose in the 21st Century.
